Novel/Movie
Hunchback of Notre Dame

Hunchback of Notre Dame takes place in 1482 during the reign of Louis XI. Its description of the Cathedral Notre Dame is immaculate but also the class system during this time with how impactful the Catholic Church is on the controlling of the government. There’s also a romantic subplot although that is minimal. The Gargoyles are a nice added addition in the Disney movie and more thoroughly aspects of the Court of Miracles are a nice added addition to the novel. It is a sad story but still would highly recommend.
Novel and Movie
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris

This is a movie that was definitely an entertaining watch discussing an everyday English woman traveling to Paris in post-World War II Europe society at Christian Dior designs. There are a ton of places that the main character goes that show all of the different classes and is truly atmospheric. If you want to learn about some Parisian Fashion history check this out.
Novel and Musical
Les Misérables

This takes place starting in 1815 and continues on through the start of French Revolution. This story has 4 perspectives with varying classes with a more emphasis of the poor. Its a profound story that has some beautiful music (although personally I would recommend reading the novel before watching the musical). Definitely has the feel of historical France.
Manga/ Anime
Yumeiro Patisserie

This one is more with the feel of French Food. This anime shows a ton about how French baking works and in the second season of the anime there are more discussions about what the students learn from training in France. Highly recommend if you need a soft version of Food Wars.
Smile Down the Runway

This one is more of the feel of French Fashion where both of the main characters’ goal is to work in France as a famous designer or model. The manga also shows the characters in modern France researching and gathering inspiration. Highly recommend if that interests you.
Novel
Rewind Series by Rowan Shaw

This is a series if you are looking for the feel of modern France with how people view disabilities and LGBTQIA+ representation. There are descriptions of Pride, Night Clubs, and beautiful sites that showed me if I could visit France as soon as possible, reading these books would help. There’s also more smexy moments as the series goes on so if that doesn’t interest you, don’t read these. Highly recommend.
