Weekly Check-in 08/14/2021

Hey guys how’s it going? Weekly Check-in time with my last week of summer coming to a close before I get back to work.

Because of this, I have watched two TV shows with my dad and read quite a bit with three novels and four manga under my belt this week. Onto the Media!

TV Show

The Border

This is a series that my dad actually wanted to watch and I became invested fast. I think its because for its time, (this came out the early 2000s after 9/11) and in Canada its stories are unique at least in the crime aspect of things. However, I am not a fan of couple of the male characters (it feels like every moment their lines are just blergh / one of them keeps having female tension with every older woman sans one and I am just not a fan) Otherwise, I am enjoying my time watching this show. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣.

Star Trek:Voyager

This is a show that my dad has watched for years on and off on syndication. This week though, we decided to start the show from the very beginning on Netflix. The episodes can be choppy and you do not necessarily have to watch them in order However, when it comes to added characters, you may not know how these people came to be etc. I like this particular sector of the Star Trek universe as opposed to others because of the variety of characters that are presented plus it doesn’t seem as silly or too serious either (plus less planetary romance currently). Overall though, I am loving this show and I would highly recommend it. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣.

Novel

Nerdgasm

Going into this book, I will be honest, I was not sure how the stuttering/fluency disorder representation was going to be handled especially when it comes to my personal knowledge. The last romance I read with this handles it very poorly. In this particular instance however, it is realistic in so many different ways in the best way. I appreciated the journey that the hero went on and how the heroine was sat down and explained how they needed to handle the hero’s stutter I loved it.

However, this could be just because of length, but I wanted more on everyone’s background especially on the heroine’s aspect I felt like there were moments she was just there to help the hero’s journey along and that’s it. Overall though, I am excited to see what happens next and more from this author. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣.

The Aussie Next Door

I was recommended this book by my dear friend Mandathebibleo check her out if you haven’t

This is a book that I was not sure honestly how it was going to go, however, I truly enjoyed it. First trigger warnings for discussion of abuse both verbal and physical, commitment issues, and a ton of animal content. I truly enjoyed this story with the journey that both of the main characters go on with a really fascinating slow-burn romance. I feel like I could definitely understand how both characters felt a lot more than usual especially when it came to the serious moments although I loved the funny moments too. However, there are a few times in this book where it could have ended and I would have been satisfied. I enjoyed what happened yes, however, there may be some people who may get annoyed towards the end. Overall, I loved this author’s writing and characters so much that I would read more from them. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣.

The Bride Test

This is a book that I was waiting until closer to the release date of the latest one (it’ll be in a couple of weeks upon writing this review) and I can see where a lot of people had problems with this book but I can also see the merits. Trigger warnings for grief, for different ways of love, and some for mistreatment of people particularly immigrants. This book has a deeper story than its predecessor and I think because of that, I like it more. I wish though we got more about the examination of love and autism with this couple because it could have made the story even better for me personally. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣.

Manga

Series Starters

Superwomen in Love

This is a concept that I have wanted to see in media for a bit but the first time I tried, it was meh. However, I think I either needed a visual or the concept just works better as an anime or manga because I loved this manga.

I love the humor that was presented and the visual appeal of the fights as well. I also love that there are two sets of couples as well that make things appeal for everyone. I think my only issue with this manga, is that the ending was too abrupt. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4-4.5 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣.

Series Continuations

Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family

With me this week, I am having to figure out new and fascinating meals for myself so because of that, this manga series is definitely one to read for that. I got a ton of new ideas but also this particular volume had a plot with some added friendships and potential relationships. They’re also definitely very nice when it comes to having a quick read. Overall, I love this series and I am really glad I continued on. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣.

And Yet, You are So Sweet

This is a manga series that is similar to High School Debut because of the first time relationship aspect. I love how the guy is so sweet and the girl is so relatably awkward. The only issue I had with this particular volume was the interloper that was presented towards the end of the volume I was very annoyed with him. Otherwise, it’s a lot of fun if you love young love. Because of these points, I have to give it a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣.

Aoba-kun’s Confessions

Ahhhhhhh this volume!!! I love the character development that happened in here,I love how we are learning more about the other characters in the series and the ending Ahhhh!!!! In a sense, I am happy to see its not an expected reply for a male character but at the same time I need more from this series. Because of those points, I have to give this manga volume a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣.

The Week Ahead

With work starting up the week ahead, I am not sure how my media consumption is going to work out. I may though be watching a lot more than reading. What about you guys? What did you read or watch this week? Let’s talk about it.
