Weekly Check-in 07/31/2021

Hey guys how’s it going? Weekly Check-in time!! This week was a light media consumption week.

Because of this, I read two novels and one manga as well as watched three TV shows this week. Onto the media!

TV Show

Atypical

This week I watched the last season of this show and I didn’t know it was the last one until after I researched it, and I appreciated how it ended in the sense of the character development and the journey of becoming a more independent Autistic with some humor and other drama mixed in. I think my only issue with the end of this series is that it felt like there were some ambigious aspects that didn’t get fulfilled for me personally but overall, this was a fun journey and I am excited to rewatch this again in the future. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣.

Firefly Lane

This is a show that I had heard about, but it wasn’t something that I was going to watch because I was not sure about the premise. However, my dad ended up starting to watch it and my mom and I decided to watch it too. It is very dramatic trigger warnings for rape, womanizing, miscarriages, cheating, drug use, parental verbal abuse, etc. The journey that both leading ladies go on is so fascinating and interesting especially among all of the different decades they have lived and overcame especially with women’s rights. My only gripe with this was that the cinematography between the decades and flashbacks was very disjointed and not cohesive so because of that, there are moments that I wasn’t sure when events happened. Because of these points, I have to give this show a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi🍣🍣🍣🍣. I am curious to see what happens next.

The Crown

This week, I am still continuing to love this show. All of the actors are doing well in their respectful roles and as an audience member, you are able to see all the big yet some moments small of evolution that the Crown has done since the coronation. But in this particular week’s episodes there was a lot more about the heir (which I know very little about) and more of the background characters which I appreciated very much. I would highly recommend it. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣🍣.

Manga

Standalone

Shino Can’t Say Her Name

Trigger warning for bullying and the F word in multiple places. When it came to this story I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel especially when it came to my experience with a manga similar to this. I was pleasantly surprised with the fluency disorder representation and that there was musical aspect as well. There was more realness to the story although I wish the adults were more helpful than they were.

I loved that there was a friendship story rather than a romance story but I wish the epilogue wasn’t so short and sweet I wanted more. Overall though, I really appreciated this story and I highly recommend this who want to read a more serious story with communication. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣.

Novel

The A to Z of Us

Thank you to Netgalley and HQ Digital
Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book

I will be honest, this was a story that I enjoyed while reading but it was difficult coming back to it once I put it down.

When I did read it though, I loved the concept of the alphabet themed dates and how unique they were with the variety of both adventurous yet comfortable all at the same time.

I loved that there was both a journey of self-discovery and life lessons learned from both main characters but, at the same time, I felt that there was a lot of the same conflicts over and over again towards the end to just keep it going. I think if there was a variety, like the dates, it would have enhanced the story.

Overall, I think that I would recommend this story for someone who wants to read a romance story with a variety of dates and personal journey experiences but I would make some changes. Because of these points, I have to give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣. Check this out if you haven’t already its already out!

Thor Daughter of Asgard

Thank you to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books, Inc. for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This book has a fantastic concept with adult relationships and inclusion with an addition of Norse Mythology that is very fun although unbelievable at times (fictional story so I don’t knock it). The characters are also quite a bit of fun and colorful but also realistic with their professional lives which is something that doesn’t tend to happen in paranormal romances that I liked in this.

I think my only issues with it though was the plot and the writing style. I like the concept and everything that was presented to the reader, however there’s a lot more telling than showing plus the order of events were either too slow at points or too fast at points with no set speed. I also wasn’t sure on the perspectives on what was happening at times, although it was a entertaining time nonetheless.

Because of these points, I have to give this a 3.5 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣. I am intrigued to see what happens next. This is already out so check it out if you haven’t already

The Week Ahead
