Weekly Check-in 07/03/2021

Hey guys how’s it going? Weekly Check-in time! This week I tried some new things but also caught up with some old favorites.

Because of that, I watched one TV show and two anime. I also read two volumes of manga, one graphic novel, and one book. Onto the media!

TV Show

Shadow and Bone

So my dad and I decided to watch this this week after I hyped it up for him based on the fandom. However, this show was a lot of fun. I know who the main characters are up to a certain point, but I know nothing about the plot of either book series so watching this show, made me invested in the characters, curious about what’s going to happen next, and intrigued by how the fantasy world works. I don’t know if I’ll read the books now, but I think as a person who hasn’t read the books can definitely still understand what’s going on. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣because a couple of characters felt a little flat. We are definitely watching season 2 when it comes out.

Anime

Bungo Stray Dogs

So this is an anime/manga/light novel series that I had heard so many good things about, but at the same time, no one talks much about the plot or characters(at least not in ny circles). This is not for the faint of heart with a lot of violence, suicidal discussion, and a ton of manipulation of other characters.

The best way I can describe the series at the whole is think of a live action crime show with some episodic crimes and stories. However, there are bigger organizations at play and bigger plots and storylines with some supernatural tendencies that I have only scratched the surface of as of this week. Overall though, this is definitely living up to the hype, but there are some moments it does feel a bit much. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣.

One Piece

This week’s several episodes of One piece were ones that made me enjoy the characters more than before with curiosity about someone’s origin story (I know its coming I know it is I just want it to happen already) But overall, I am liking the twists and turns that are happening and I am still loving the show (although there are moments I am like really you are that goofy Luffy????) Because of these points, I have to give this anime a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣.

Manga

Series Starters

The Drops of God

I saw this one randomly on Amazon Prime Reading library and I was intrigued

Ehhhhhh, I think either I was just the wrong audience for this or it just made me uncomfortable. It was very educational when it came to how to serve wine and how there is more than one way of becoming a wine connoisseur, however, the language in this and the negative visuals I just felt awful after I read it. I do understand that this is for certain audiences and I will recommend it for those people, however its not for me. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣🍣🍣.

Series Continuations

Waiting for Spring

This manga volume was the quintessential summer vacation volume, festivals, fireworks, theme parks etc. I loved all of the romantic moments and the character growth that was presented as well. However, I am still not a fan of the character on this cover, he just isn’t my favorite. The other characters are great 😀. Because of these points, I have to give this volume a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣.

Graphic Novel

Weeaboo

Thank you to Netgalley and Oni Press for the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel

I will be honest, I wasn’t sure how this graphic novel was going to go. However, I think if you are looking for seniors in high school trying to discover their places in the world and how living in fandom can affect the real world, this can be a great graphic novel for you. Be that as it may though, I had some issues with this.

First, I think the artstyle is unique and interesting, however, there were moments in this the paneling and placement in dialogue was confusing especially in the beginning of the story.

Second, I think to a lot of people there are going to be some language in here that are going to be offensive and could have been presented another way especially when it came to stereotypes and assumptions. Some were corrected towards the end but the others that remained, personally I wish it could have been presented a different way. A way that doesn’t date it or feel like old language.

Lastly, I personally think that the play panels were only necessary in the second half of the play during opening night but otherwise, were unnecessary. I think it was to attempt to show how a certain character was trying to overcome their sexuality and life but honestly I think its unnecessary because I am not sure its purpose.

Overall, I think again this is definitely a story to try, although I personally think this will make people unhappy more than enjoyable. Because of these points, I have to give this graphic novel a 2.5 out of 5 stars or 2 sushi 🍣🍣. This comes out on November 17th 2021 so if you’re interested, check it out then.

Novel

With You Forever

Thank you so much for Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book

This series is one that seems to come to me in the moments I most need it. The leading lady and guy have been in lust with each other for awhile but circumstances arise to have them come together in the most fun and unique way from the others before. There is a ton of self-discovery with both characters but also they work together to create a beautiful slow-burning love that I felt a lot of different emotions for in a good way. I also loved that although it was a marriage of convenience plot, it didn’t feel stilted and strange. I think its because these characters have known each other for a long time and weren’t complete strangers but still I am not sure. I also appreciated all of their loving care both mentally and physically with each other because that is definitely my love language I have discovered. Overall, this may be my favorite book in the series so far (This keeps happening every time I read them so who knows if its me or the books haha) if I had one nitpick it would be there were a couple of characters that were side characters that I wasn’t able to visualize in my head they felt too much in the background to me even though they got a lot of book time. Because of these points, I have to give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣🍣. I loved it very much! This comes out Sept 14th 2021 so check out this series if you haven’t already.

The Week Ahead

This next week is going to be weird with Sunday being my birthday so I don’t know how that on is going to go but otherwise I am just going to be just going with the flow. What about you guys? What did you read or watch this week? Let’s talk about it!
