Weekly Check-In 06/26/2021

Hey guys how’s it going? Weekly Check-in time! So this week along with the “normal” scheduled activities, I went on a road trip with the family. The first one since the current world craziness haha.

The Muppets are the best!

Because of that, This week, I was able to watch two anime series along with one tv show. I was also able to read five volumes of manga and two novels. Onto the media!!

Anime

Horimiya

This is the newest contemporary anime out there so I had to check it out.

So after listening to this podcast<- one anime at a time (check it out if you want some indepth anime reviews) about this anime, I had to check it out and I can definitely see the hype.

It gives me Say I Love You vibes but with an opposing character dynamic. There’s also a lot more guy stuff for a contemporary romance along with so far not a lot of unnecessary drama which was refreshing. I was also sort of watching the first episode with my parents and my dad did give a couple of chuckles in(he’s not an anime person at all so I will take that as a win).

Overall, though I am enjoying my time watching it, I think my only issue I have with it is that time is very weird when it comes to the order of episodes but since I don’t know the source material yet I am not sure if that’s intentional or not. Because of these points though, I have to give this a 4-4.5 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣.

One Piece

This photo is featuring Sanji! He’s one of my fave characters

Sigh, so much happened in this week’s episodes yet so little happened all at once. I feel like its now gotten so far onto left field that I can’t explain. But its still fun and I am going to continue watching it. 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣.

TV Show

Great Food Truck Race

Yeah guys, I think this will be a regular occurrence until my family and I catch up to the latest season but I have to say this season, season four is my favorite one so far in this binge watch. I liked it because it was all an equal playing field and who you think is going to win, doesn’t. Because of that, I am going to give this season a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣🍣.

Manga

Standalone

5 Centimeters per Second

I read this manga for an upcoming blog post check it out if you’re interested

So this was a manga that I was unsure about going into because I heard the anime movie was beautiful but not the best and essentially I felt like this was a story that had no point???? Ah! I am not trying to say I hated it but the ending left me unfulfilled. I feel like the reader was supposed to be invested in the characters’ love life and we were. However,  there were a lot more profound words than plot and the ending! the ending! I am just like nooooooooooooo. I understand why it happened however, it still made me mad that the plot turned out the way it did. I think though I was mainly mad because of the guy stringing everyone along and just turned into a milktoast. I did however, appreciate how the girls/women handled themselves towards the guy.  I think if you’re interested in an unfufilled story with some profound quotes, check this out but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend this.  Because of these points, I have to give this manga a 2.5 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣🍣🍣.

Series Starters

LDK

So I read the first chapter of this manga in a sneak peek and I was just ehhh I don’t know….. welll…..

This manga was one I have heard so many good things about and I after reading the sneak peek was not sure how the dynamics between the main characters was going to be. However! I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed the dynamic between the leading characters and the female best friendship(even though the other girls are just so meannnn-.- ) some of them just need a knock on their head. Anyhow, I also although in my particular real life love life getting tricked can get really annoying, but I loved the guy doing that and how wholesome he can be (although he can be a butt too). Overall though, this manga was a really great start to a series and I am really excited to see what happens next. Because of these points, I have to give this manga a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣.

Series Continuations

Voice Over! Seiyu Academy

This volume took a turn I wasn’t expecting it to go. I loved that there was behind the scenes discussion on how to animate an original anime and that there was an added character to make some of the more supporting characters out to light. I also appreciated the spotlight of how copying other people can be awful for personality etc.

I think though, I wished there was more romance involved than there was but maybe that will happen in the future who knows?

If you enjoy Skip Beat but you want a high school perspective and voice acting check out this series. Because of these points, I have to give this manga a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣.

BL Metamorphosis

The start of this volume was a very good transition from the previous volume with the start of a convention. I enjoyed the parallels between the two main characters trying to navigate their fandom lives and the other aspects of their lives and at the end with a book club like aspect that was really fun also. I think my favorite part though was the younger character started to create her own artwork to eventually become an manga artist and her favorite artist’s humble beginnings being shown to the reader at the same time was very moving to me. Because of those points, I have to give this one a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣 only because I am not sure how this is going to go in future volumes.

Series Finale

Practice makes Perfect

This was an adorable finale with a ton of adorable yet sensual moments. There was a lot of good relationship buildups as well with both characters doing their own thing before an adorable (yet for me a bit intense) proposal. Overall though, I really enjoyed all four volumes but I have to say this one and the first volume were my favorites. Because of these points, I have to give this volume a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣🍣.

Novel

Advanced Physical Chemistry

Trigger warnings for food restricting, Negative Self-talk, and someone having a heart attack. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this one because it could have gone a couple of different directions. However, I enjoyed it but had some nitpicks.

First, I enjoyed the plus sized, fangirl, nice girl representation she was so much fun and hilarious at times. However, I felt like there could have been more discussion about how the main character does food restricting and how she has some self-discovery.

Second, I enjoyed the leading guy as well, but I wished we got more of his perspective, he has a very deep story even more than the leading lady and having more of his perspective throughout the book would have made things better than just the epilogue.

Lastly, maybe this was just me, but I wanted more STEAM/STEM content. The leading girl works as a US Patent Examiner, I wanted to know more about the job than what I recieved. I know that particular aspect is one that not everyone wants in their romance, but I wanted it especially if they are advertised as such.

Overall, I liked this book and I am going to continue reading this author’s books. But, I can understand how these will not be for everyone. Because of these points, I have to give this book a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown

This along with A Girl like Her got me interested in Talia Hibbert’s work and after reading Act your Age Eve Brown I wanted to go back and read the others.

I knew there was a reason I wanted to go backwards after reading Act Your Age, Eve Brown.

This book gave a character that I learned about in the previous book because they paralleled in so many different ways, but at the same time, deeper. There are also some similar themes to A Girl Like Her but in a different way which was nice that it was similar but not the exact same. Her characters and words make me feel all of the emotions in this book, and I can definitely relate to Chloe as well as Eve. I also appreciated how the leading guy acted with having an edgy exterior but also a soft interior that isn’t too sensitive in my personal opinion. They were presented a full flushed out perspective which is something that I think helps me get invested in relationships in books. Overall though, I loved this book and I am looking forward to reading more from this author. Because of these points, I have to give this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣🍣.

The Week Ahead

The week ahead is going to be the days before my birthday (July 4th or USA independence day). So I am going to be very flexible when it comes to my media consumption. What about you guys? What have you watched or read this week? Let’s talk about it!
