Hey guys how’s it going Weekly Check in time where essentially what my allergies decided to make me sneeze and cough so much I turned hoarse all week. Because of that and work, I didn’t get a lot of any media consumption done. However, I did manage to watch two anime and read five volumes of manga. Onto the media!
Ascendance of a Bookworm
I inhaled this series. I think its the perfect series for people who are beginning this type of subgenre of anime and manga. This has business, political intrigue, and magic along with religious aspects so if that doesn’t interest you do not watch this. There’s also a couple of trigger warnings for sexual assault, constant ailment, and verbal abuse. Other than that, there’s a lot of fun adventures, wholesome family and friends moments and beautiful animation. The only issue I had other than the trigger warnings was that I was ready to continue on because the ending although it was a full circle from the beginning, was unfulfilling. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣.
This week I decided to catch up on this show. I truly love this series especially because it has become deeper than expected plus the magic system is very interesting and fascinating. I also enjoy all of the character development that has happened throughout the series and especially this last volume. The only thing that I wished that happened in this volume is that there needs to be a little bit more plot at the start, then continue on throughout the season. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣🍣🍣🍣. I am really excited for what the future of this series holds.
Ok so for the concept that this turned out to have, it was a weird manga experience. There are trigger warnings for verbal abuse, weird crossdressing (I am assuming that’s what is happening but I don’t even know), grief, and a play on the playboy bunny (which is also weird in itself). I also was not a fan of the hair in the artstyle in this volume. It fell a bit flat (literally) on everyone not just one character. You’d think since this was about makeup and fashion that the people would look better but that’s my personal taste. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣🍣🍣.
The Writer and His Housekeeper
Ok I think all fans of Sweat and Soap should definitely read this. I love the erotic yet pure relationship these main characters have and steam is subtle so if you don’t want too much, this is a perfect manga for that in my opinion. One gripe that I think may be an issue for people that I personally didn’t mind were the moments where the writer speaks out what he is going to write in his book rather than talking to the housekeeper directly. There can be moments of disconnect however, I do appreciate that the reader was notified when the shift of dialogue occurs because otherwise I would’ve been confused. Other than that, I think this is a really sweet romance and I am truly excited where it goes (that ending just gutted me I want more!) Because of these points, I have to give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣 🍣 🍣🍣🍣
Yes I picked this up this week because of the title, but I really loved this.
My trigger warnings that I have for this manga is that there is some verbal abuse especially with parents.
I loved the discussion that was presented with how hobbies can be all consuming and how once they don’t turn into a hobby anymore, it could ruin the fun. I also appreciated that although this probably is going to be girls love manga, it doesn’t start out that way, it starts out as a girls friendship which is also important because support systems help with psychological difficulties.
Overall, I am excited about continuing this series and I would highly recommend if you enjoy reading about fandom, hobbies, and girl friendships. 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣🍣.
I Hear the Sunspot
I enjoy this series so much, but frankly this particular volume felt like a filler volume…… I do appreciate that it was here to present some new and interesting characters and to move the series along, however I felt there wasn’t enough happening when it came to the main characters together except towards the end. I did appreciate though the cochlear implant discussion and the background of the one of the characters’ family life. I will move forward, however, I need to lower my expectations when it comes to this particular series. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3.5 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣🍣🍣.
A Sign of Affection
Ok, third volume in and I’m truly in the unpopular opinion camp 😔😳. I think its because I really honestly am not a fan of this leading guy. I think he takes advantage of the girl about certain things because of her deafness but also his motivations for liking her (spoilers ahead) “I am fascinated by her/I want to watch her all the time…” paraphrasing but you get my point. It just makes me think that he only is after one thing when it comes to her; another culture to infiltrate and add to his list of ones he’s met etc. For about half of this volume he was gone and I loved the girl learning some more about herself but I also hated that part of the learning was because he’s making her because of his whims…..
I am torn because it has some beautiful romantic points that just make me swoon, but at the same time, this male character has disappointed me again and again.
Overall though, I think everyone should try this series, however, even if the first one is swoony and wonderful which it is, think of the ones afterward as well. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣🍣🍣
The Week Ahead
I have a feeling I say this every week, however, I think this particular one as far as media consumption, again I will be taking it easy and read and watch as little or as much as possible. However, there are a couple of extra blog posts coming out this week too. What about you guys? What did you read or watch this week? Are your allergies going nuts too?? Let’s talk about it!
