Weekly Check-in 09/12/2020-9/19/2020

I’ll be honest guys these last couple of weeks have been hectic because of work. But I watched a lot with my mom. I watched an anime and romance movie, a volume of manga, started a show, ended an anime, and watched a Broadway Opera. Onto the Media!

These past two weeks my mom and I spent some free time together

Romance Movie

Set it Up

I got into the hype with this movie and my mom and I decided to try it out.

Sigh, I liked this movie in the sense it was unexpected but I totally hated the guys in it because most of them were total jerks. Plus it just seemed like some of the jokes didn’t land….. at least not with my particular sense of humor. The other thing that was really annoying was that the soundtrack felt like every other rom com out there which is excellent for new rom com watchers but for more experienced ones like me it wasn’t the best. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣.

Anime Movie

Flavors of Youth International version

This has been on my list for awhile and finally on a whim just went for it.

This was a movie I decided to watch with my mom on a whim thinking it was something related to food and to some extent it was and to some extent it wasn’t.

First, know this when you watch, it’s essentially an anthology of stories that revolve around food in some way . So especially eat before you watch.

Second, I am not exactly sure what the point of this movie was, the only thing I can say is that food and others bring happiness to the world. So take it with a grain of salt.

Trigger warnings for verbal abuse, bulimic tendencies, violence, and death of a family member.

Overall, the animation was gorgeous and pretty much the only reason I watched all the way through. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3 out of 5 stars or 3

Anime Series

Run With The Wind

I have enjoyed this show so much that I put it in my Sports Anime for Athletic Newbies post before I even finished it. Check this out Guys.

What I love about this anime the most is that although this is a team with individual times etc., it takes the time to give most of the boys background information and presents all of their motivations for running. In addition, you are able to get invested in the aspects of running and working together to run a complex course.

The last couple of episodes seem a little unrealistic in the animation aspect however, I am not a runner so I don’t know how runner’s high works. AND THE ENDING OF THE LAST EPISODE!!!!!! (Sorry for the Caps it was necessary) emotional yet satisfying yet unsatisfying all at the same time. Also the animation is gorgeous yet rough at the same time when it comes to the people. This is definitely one I am going to rewatch over and over again. Becuase of these points, I have to give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars or 5 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣🍣

Manga

Mixed Vegetables vol 4

I was recommended this by Lindsey Tut on YouTube and Instagram check her out if you haven’t already.

This series is one I want to binge read essentially because there are some continuous plots but also the art is amazing. When it came to this particular volume though, it was good but also lacked the balance of plot because of the subplot that was involved in this volume.

However, I can continue this series and finish it to the end because of the food, because of the angst that happens between the two main characters, and because of the overall entertainment of working hard on something you love and mastering it but also the understanding of the obstacles that may come your way.

Overall though, this manga gives me the anime Yumeiro Pattiessire vibes but in a more contemporary setting and I am excited to continue in the future. Because of these points, I have to give this volume a 3-3.5 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣.

Broadway Opera

Hamilton

My goodness this was something that has been on my mom and I’s list for awhile so when I showed her Disney Plus (somewhat of a game changer for our house) we wanted to watch it. Apparently, in agreement we said it probably would have been very disappointing if we had paid for this in the theater and this is why:

1. The first half was just non-investing to us lots of operatic/rap content and items involving Hamilton and the Revolutionary War that doesn’t exactly have a cohesive plot (at least not to us.)

2. The women stole the show for us. The main women characters that were presented in this helped with the plot quite a bit plus their songs were beautiful. But they weren’t in the show as much as we wanted.

3. The second half like I said earlier was fantastic but I feel it would have had more attention grabbing if there was more dialogue. Not sung or rapped but spoken.

Overall, I can see exactly what the show was trying to do. I love how it helps learning about the Revolution/Constitutional era. However, there wasn’t a lot of investment for me because of these points, I have to give this a 3-3.5 out of 5 stars or 3 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣.

TV Show

Girlfriends

I watched this show a bit out of order when I was a teenager (hey no cable/not much streaming made teenagers need to find something on television back in the day and watching it now has been really fascinating.

The issues that are presented in this show are ones that are still relevant today in addition it is semi educational for people to understand the black women. Because of these points, I have to say its a 4 out of 5 stars or 4 sushi 🍣 🍣🍣🍣.

The Week Ahead

This week ahead, I am not quite sure what I’m going to watch or read. But I am hoping the media is better this week. What about you guys? What did you guys read or watch this week? Let’s talk about it!
